Ways to gain space in a small flat
What to look at before knocking down walls: circulation, storage and the window line.

In a small flat most of the lost area is circulation. Moving a door sometimes gains more than removing a wall, because it increases the length of wall that furniture can stand against.
Storage deserves its own plan. A built-in wardrobe running to the ceiling does not shrink the room; by gathering scattered items in one place it actually calms the space.
A last rule: keep the window line clear. When tall furniture stays away from the window the room reads as deeper and daylight travels further in.
